How to make honey glazed chicken wings in air fryer

When I think of chicken wings, only one word comes to mind, “Yummy”! With that crispy skin and juicy tender center, it makes a great snack, side or even main course. So, do you want an easy and quick way to get them done perfectly without the mess? Wings in the air fryer is the answer!

The air fryer cooks by circulating hot air so the wings are cooked evenly and perfectly. What I love as well is that it doesn’t create the mess that deep frying would. Oh, and did I mention that it cooks in a lot less time than the oven!

This means that you can enjoy cooking these wings just as much as it’s taste and you can add it to your favorite meals to prepare regularly.

Things to note:

Air Fryer capacity: The size and the type of air fryer will determine how many chicken wings you can cook in one go. For example, my Consori Air Fryer can fit 10 wingettes/drumettes (4 full wings) while my mom’s Cuisinart Air Fryer convection toaster oven fits 18 wingettes/drumettes (8 full wings).

The main idea is to place them in a single layer and do not overcrowd them so that they can cook evenly. Also note that if there are gaps between the wings, this will get the sides crispy as well.

I also prefer to use wingettes/drumettes because they are more uniform so are easier to pack into the air fryer basket.

Buying and preparing: It is best to use fresh chicken wings that have been cut into wingettes or drumettes to make them easier to fit into the air fryer.

Making frozen wings in the air fryer is just as nice if you don’t have fresh wings. They will need to be defrosted or thawed before cooking. So, you will need to plan ahead and allow extra time to do this.

If frozen, they can be defrosted in the microwave oven or cold water. Alternatively, you can thaw them by placing them in the fridge a few hours or the night before you plan to cook the wings. Make sure to pat them dry before marinating them.

If you have full wings and you want to cut them up, then the easiest way is to cut along the joints (cartilage) that connect the wingettte, drumette, and tip.

The tip can either be cooked as well or you could save it for making stock.

Internal temperature for chicken: It’s recommended to cook chicken until it reaches 165 degrees Fahrenheit (74 degrees Celsius) for it to be safe to eat. Use a temperature probe to check that this temperature is reached.

Serving Suggestions:

  1. Frozen French fries are always a winner with chicken wings. These can be made with the air fryer too and they come out crispy and crunchy!
  2. As a healthier choice, choose to serve them with cut up vegetables like celery sticks, carrot sticks, and cucumber sticks. If you want to spruce things up then you may decide to have some sour cream dips.
  3. Roasted butternut squash/pumpkin or air fried garlic butternut squash/pumpkin.
  4. Steamed broccolini with some garlic and salt.
  5. Air fried mixed vegetables medley.
  6. Avocado Greek salad makes the meal more refreshing.
  7. Boiled or grilled corn on the cob goes just as well.

Equipment

  • Air Fryer
  • Tongs
  • Large mixing bowl

Ingredients

  • 500 grams Chicken wings (preferably wingettes/drumettes)

Chicken wings marinade

  • 3 tablespoons Oyster Sauce
  • 4 tablespoons Soy Sauce
  • 3 teaspoons Garlic (diced)
  • 1 teaspoon Chilli paste

Honey mixture

  • 2 tablespoons Honey
  • 3 tablespoons Water

Instructions

  • Clean the chicken wings. Refer to “Buying and preparing” section above.
  • Combine the chicken wings with the Chicken wings marinade ingredients in a large mixing bowl and make sure that all the chicken wings are covered with the marinade.
  • Set it aside for at least 45 minutes for marinating. To bring out the best flavours allow the chicken wings to marinate overnight.
  • Spray oil in the fryer basket or rack. You can also opt to use parchment paper.
  • Preheat the air fryer to 180 degrees Celsius (356 degrees Fahrenheit) for about 1 minute. Refer to your air fryer manual or pre-heat settings.
  • Place the chicken wing in the air fryer basket or rack. Make sure the chicken wings are in a single layer. Leave a small gap between the wings. The wider the gap, the more space is allowed for the hot air can circulate in between to crisp the sides of the wings.
  • Set the air fryer temperature to 170 degrees Celsius (338 degrees Fahrenheit) for 20 minutes.
  • Mix the honey and water together then set it aside.
  • After the first 10 minutes, pull out the basket and using tongs flip the chicken wings and coat with honey water mixture.
  • Place the basket back into the air fryer and continue cooking for 10 minutes.
  • When done, pull out the basket and remove the chicken wings with tongs and plate them.
  • Sprinkle with some black sesame for garnishing and serve hot with your favorite side dish or refer to our serving suggestions for ideas.
