How I started with the air fryer

When I heard about the air fryer, I didn’t know how it would be different from my other kitchen appliances. That was before I went out and bought my first one, which was the Consori air fryer. The thing is, I am a mom to two young boys, and I love cooking them home-cooked meals. However, this gets challenging when I have work deadlines to meet and bedtime schedules to keep.

So, I had a second look at the air fryer, and after I did some research, it turned out that the air fryer is a mix between the deep fryer and the oven. That excited me as my kids love their crunchy and crispy food, which the air fryer claims to do well. Plus, it cooks fast. At this stage, I felt that I wanted to give it a go, and I don’t regret it at all!

When I opened the box, I couldn’t believe its size. My Consori air fryer is family-sized, so it took up more space than I thought it would. Once I got used to the size, I started reading the manual and playing with the device. It was pretty easy to use and intuitive. The first thing I cooked was some frozen chicken nuggets and chips; I was delighted at how fast they cooked and how crunchy and crispy the food was.

I thought I would use it to make quick snacks and light lunches for my kids, but after mastering the skills, I couldn’t help but try all sorts of recipes. Some worked well, others didn’t, but experimenting and making notes was fun. Soon, I started a collection of air fryer recipes and cooking tips that worked for me, and I thought it would be great to share them to inspire others to get creative with their air fryers.

Why buy an air fryer?

Since I started cooking with the air fryer, I use it more frequently than any other kitchen appliance to prepare meals, and this is why:

  • It’s easy to use and clean.
  •  There is no need for preheating the air fryer as it reaches the optimal temperature rapidly.
  • Minimal supervision which means I can reclaim my time while my food is cooking.
  • The food tastes crispy on the outside while being tender on the inside.
  • Reduction in the oil used in food can help in making meals healthier.

These are just a few reasons I love my air fryer.

Our Buyer's Guide To Air Fryers

How does an Air Fryer work?

An Air Fryer is a cooking machine that resembles a smaller version of your oven and microwave combined. A basic Air Fryer cooks the food with the circulation of hot air which is generated from a heating element, it is usually above the Air Fryer basket and a fan that circulates the hot air. This cooking method allows the food to be cooked evenly and with less oil being used. The temperature and time can also be adjusted to allow you to cook your food according to your preferences.

How to choose your Air Fryer?

Since 2010, when the first Philips Air Fryer was introduced, the market has grown substantially with many variations of this cooking device giving consumers many choices. Our buyer’s guide will highlight key decision-making factors that will assist you in your decision for getting the best Air Fryer suited for you.

Key decision-making factors

Air Fryer Capacity

There are various sizes of Air Fryers which is suited for your needs. They range from small, medium, large and even extra large. The size that you need will depend on your intended use of this device. Some questions that you could consider would be:

  1. How big is your family and what is the average appetite levels that they consume?
  2. How many people to you cook for on a regular basis? For example you could be a single couple however you tend to hold a lot of dinners at home regularly then you would need a bigger Air Fryer.
  3. Do you intent to use the Air Fryer just to do light and easy meals or do you need it for preparing full meals?

Depending on your needs based on the above questions, we have addressed these questions and provided our recommendations in the Air Fryer Capacity section of this website.

Multifunctional Air Fryer

Some Air Fryers now come with additional functions that are an add-on to the basic models. When deciding on which Air Fryer is best for you, it is worthwhile to consider whether you require more functionalities in your Air Fryer, which would then save you money and counter space if you could have one device that fulfills most of your cooking needs. The main Multifunctional Air Fryers on the market today are the following:

  • Air Fryer with rotisserie
  • Air Fryer and toaster oven
  • Air Fryer and pressure cooker

We have reviewed and provided our recommendations in the Multifunctional Air Fryer section of this website.

Other Factors In Choosing Your Air Fryer

Air Fryer power consumption

The average air fryer uses about 1/3 less energy than a full-sized oven. This is because it cooks food with circulating hot air at a rapid speed. It also means you can save money by cooking more often without worrying about adding up high electricity bills at the end of each month. And since it only takes minutes for the food to cook in an air fryer, there are no long preheating times either!

What food can you cook in the air fryer?

If you want to make crispy chicken wings or fried fish fillets without using any oil at all, then the Air Fryer is perfect for you! This device also works well when it comes to making roasted vegetables like cauliflower and potatoes. And if you love sweet treats but hate how much sugar they contain, then try baking brownies or cookies in your Air Fryer instead!

How to clean an Air Fryer?

Cleaning an air fryer isn’t difficult at all as the detachable parts are dishwasher safe. However, hand washing is best to prolong the non-stick coating. Also, the only parts that need to be washed are the detachable parts. You want to make sure that no water gets into the electrical components of your machine, which could cause damage over time if not cleaned properly after each use.

What Air Fryer accessories do I need?

Many air fryers (especially multifunctional air fryers) come with some accessories. This may be something you keep in mind when deciding which air fryer to buy.

We recommend experimenting with your air fryer first because you don’t need any accessories when you are making easy meals in the beginning.

Then when you become accustomed to it, you can try other complex recipes and at that point, you can decide whether you want to buy an accessory kit.

However, you may consider getting parchment paper because they help protect the non-stick surface from food sticking inside the basket while frying. You’ll also want tongs if you plan on removing items from the basket without touching them directly with your hands (which we don’t recommend).
